As New York prepares to mark 25 years since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, a new initiative will honor the lives lost by planting trees across the country.

On Wednesday, Sept. 9, One Tree Planted and the 9/11 Day National Commemoration Committee will plant a 15-foot tree at the Battery’s Labyrinth for Contemplation in Lower Manhattan. Families of some 9/11 victims are expected to attend.

The planting will launch “Together We Grow,” an initiative that aims to plant 3,000 trees across the U.S. over the next year in honor of those who died in the attacks.

Hank Lynch, president and CEO of One Tree Planted, joined “Weekends On 1” to discuss the initiative.
