GARRISON – Super Storm Sandy might have been a storm of the century — an event that decimated the hamlet of Garrison’s Landing along the Hudson River.
Yet the tiny community has been plagued with other floods over the years along its riverfront and now the Open Space Institute hopes to assist the hamlet’s residents and businesses by raising $100,000 to hire an engineering firm to create plans for the area.
If the plans are completed within the next year, the Open Space Institute will seek funding from the state’s Environmental Bond Act, approved in 2022, to pay for the upgrades.
The OSI has a long-standing connection to Garrison’s Landing, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The non-for-profit has a public-access easement that covers the park as well as providing egress to the Metro-North Garrison Railroad train platform.
The bottom line is that Open Space Institute desires to make Garrison’s Landing sustainable realizing it will continue to flood due to its proximity to the Hudson but it will not wash away from future floodwaters.
