This spring, the star-studded cast will lead the Broadway premiere of the 2017 play by Bess Wohl, a 2026 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner for Liberation.

A star-studded cast will lead the Broadway premiere of Bess Wohl’s play Small Mouth Sounds this spring, beginning performances at the Barrymore Theatre on February 18 ahead of a March 18 opening night.

The cast includes Oscar winner Julia Roberts (Erin Brokovich, Pretty Woman), Emmy nominee Paul Rudd (Ant-Man, Clueless), Emmy and Tony winner Sarah Paulson (Appropriate, The People v. O. J. Simpson), Emmy winner Martin Freeman (Sherlock, The Hobbit), Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Greta Lee (The Morning Show, Past Lives), and Isaac Powell (West Side Story, Once on This Island).

Small Mouth Sounds follows six strangers at a silent spiritual retreat in the woods, where their internal struggles and newfound interpersonal connections put their vow of silence to the test. The show premiered off Broadway with Ars Nova in 2015, when it was a New York Times Critic’s Pick and named to “top theatre of 2015” lists by multiple publications.

Wohl went on to become a Tony nominee for her Broadway-debut play Grand Horizons in 2020, and a 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Best Play Tony Award winner for her play Liberation.

Tony Award winner Joe Mantello (Death of a Salesman, Assassins, Take Me Out, Wicked) directs the show’s Broadway premiere. Earlier today, he was also announced as director of Bruce Norris’s Downstate, making its own Broadway premiere in October.

Small Mouth Sounds also has scenic design by Chloe Lamford, costume design by An D’Huys, lighting design by Jack Knowles, sound design by Tom Gibbons, music by Caroline Shaw, and movement by JA Collective.
