NYC releases 170,000 pages showing officials knew 9/11 air was unsafe

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the release of 170,000 pages of records at a press conference. The records reveal that officials were aware of contamination concerns and air quality issues despite repeated reassurance following the 9/11 attack.

Mamdani said, “As the years pass and the human toll grows, we reckon with the cost of September 11th whenever another New Yorker is stolen from us too soon. Now, close to 25 years later, more people have died from 9/11-related illnesses than were killed on the day itself.”

According to CNN, City officials confirmed that local environmental agencies collected data that showcases contamination. The air quality reports and communication records show there were concerns about air quality following the attack.

Previously, Mamdani announced that the city would allocate $34 million to create a public portal for publishing records. The portal was established to provide public transparency about how officials handled the aftermath at ground zero following the attack on the World Trade Center.

The officials were focused on restabilizing Lower Manhattan and reopening the area. Documents were placed in 68 boxes stored in the city. They were released ahead of the 25th anniversary of the attacks.

The advocacy group 9/11 Health Watch previously sued the city over the release of the records. Over the years, surviors, victim families have pushed for the release of records, which are now being made public.

Zohran Mamdani appeared alongside Jon Stewart and survivor families for the transparency and resources surrounding the 9/11 attack. The new documents also shed light on official responses, memos, information, environmental assessments, and concerns surrounding the air quality. The documents showcase how officials worked to restore normalcy in the area.
