After serving 70 years as Britain’s monarch, Queen Elizabeth died on Sept. 8, 2022. She was 96.
The late monarch ascended the throne when she was just 25 years old, shortly after her father King George VI died in 1952. In the decades that followed she became known for her unwavering sense of duty, dedication to her family, and her love for animals, especially her horses and corgis.
In addition to being the longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth and husband Prince Phillip also had the longest marriage in royal history, having been married for 73 years. The couple shared four children together and would eventually become grandparents of eight. Shortly after her death, she was succeeded by her eldest son, King Charles, who was coronated in May 2023.
