Casting is now set for The National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene’s upcoming presentations of Di Yam Gazlonim!—a Yiddish adaptation of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance—October 25 at 2 PM and 7 PM at Symphony Space.
The Folksbiene presented the world premiere of Al Grand and Allen Lewis Rickman‘s adaptation in 2007, and the production was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical.
The Symphony Space cast will be led by Emmy nominee Jackie Hoffman (Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish) as Rivke (Ruth in the original), Rickman (A Serious Man) as Der Groyser General (Major General), Annabel Milisa Parker as Malke (Mabel), Drew Seigla as Fayvl (Frederick), MAC winner Adam B. Shapiro (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Sargeant of Police, and silent film pianist Steve Sterner as Groyser Gazlen (Pirate King).
Among the ensemble will be Bob Ader, Ashley Adler, Kirk Geritano, Hannah Goodman, Stephanie Lynne Mason, Eli Mayer, John Reed, and Yelena Shmulenson.
Music director Zalmen Mlotek will lead a nine-piece orchestra. Simultaneous supertitles in English will be projected on stage.
A reimagining of the classic Gilbert and Sullivan musical, Di Yam Gazlonim!, press notes state, “takes the tale of a dutiful pirate apprentice to new depths, seeing it through the lens of Yiddish culture, and replacing Victorian propriety with exuberant Yiddishkayt.”
