New York City Council Deputy Leader San­dra Ung hosted the 2nd Annual “UNG-believable” Back-to-School Block Party on Friday, September 4, in front of her District Office on Latimer Place between Linden Boulevard and 137th Street, bring­ing together hundreds of families, students, educa­tors, community organizations, and local businesses to celebrate the end of summer and help children prepare for the new school year.

“This block party is about bringing our com­munity together to celebrate the end of summer and help kids start the school year with the tools they need to succeed,” said Deputy Leader Sandra Ung. “One of the things I love most about this event is seeing so many of the ‘UNG-believable’ organiza­tions that make Flushing such a special place com­ing together to support the youth in our community. I am grateful to all of our partners whose generosity and hard work made this day possible. And good luck to the students as they prepare to start a new school year!”

During the event, Deputy Leader Sandra Ung announced a $400,000 allocation she was able to secure in this year’s budget for technology upgrades at her alma mater, JHS 189. Also in attendance was District Attorney Melinda Katz.

The event was co-hosted by Congresswoman Grace Meng, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, State Senator John Liu, and Assemblyman Ron Kim.

More than 30 local nonprofits, government agencies, cultural institutions, and community or­ganizations participated in the event, providing families with information about programs and serv­ices and distributing hundreds of free backpacks, school supplies, books, and other giveaways to help students get ready for the start of the school year.

The event featured a full afternoon of enter­tainment and activities for families. Live perform­ances included martial arts and street dance performances by Evolute Academy and Champion Martial Arts, dance routines from Dance for the People, a Chinese yo-yo presentation by Glow Cul­tural Center, and a Zumba class led by the Flushing YMCA.

The event also highlighted Deputy Leader Ung’s continued investment in District 20 schools. During the block party, Deputy Leader Ung pre­sented a $400,000 check to District 25 Superintend­ent Dr. Michael Dantona and JHS 189 Principal Brian Bradley, representing funding she secured in the Fiscal Year 2027 city budget for technology up­grades and other improvements at the school.

“Every child in District 20 deserves to learn in a school that is safe, modern, and equipped with the resources they need to succeed,” said Deputy Leader Sandra Ung. “That is why I fought to secure $3.4 million for our schools in this year’s budget. Whether it is upgrading technology, improving bathrooms and gyms, or making our schools safer, these investments are about giving our students and educators the environment they deserve. Our chil­dren are our future, and investing in their schools is one of the most important investments we can make in our community.”
