State Police were out in force across New York over the Labor Day holiday weekend, and thousands of drivers ended up with tickets, including hundreds in the Hudson Valley.
New York State Police Issue More Than 11,000 Tickets Over Labor Day Weekend
If you were out on the roads over the Labor Day weekend, you might have noticed that there were a lot of police monitoring roads across New York. Specifically, the New York State Police were conducting a special enforcement campaign aimed at cracking down on speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, and other dangerous behavior behind the wheel.

According to the New York State Police, the holiday enforcement campaign was a success, with troopers issuing 11,201 tickets statewide during the four-day enforcement period, which ran from Friday, September 4 through Monday, September 7.
Troopers also made 253 DWI arrests and investigated 632 crashes, including five fatal crashes.
Speeding was by far the most common violation, with State Police issuing 3,935 speeding tickets statewide. Troopers also issued 308 tickets for distracted driving, 746 child restraint and seat belt violations, and 234 tickets for violations of New York’s Move Over Law.

The Hudson Valley was certainly part of the crackdown, with troopers in the region issuing 2,191 total tickets over the holiday weekend. That included 894 speeding tickets, 57 distracted driving tickets, 113 seat belt and child restraint violations, and 24 Move Over Law violations.

Troopers in the Hudson Valley also made 84 DWI arrests during the enforcement campaign. In addition to the DWI arrests, State Police reported 139 other “Penal Law” arrests between the Eastern and Western Hudson Valley regions.

The statewide numbers were also up compared to last year’s Labor Day enforcement campaign.
Last year, State Police issued 9,912 tickets and arrested 225 people for DWI. This year, that number jumped to 11,201 tickets, meaning troopers issued 1,289 more tickets than they did during last year’s campaign. DWI arrests also increased by 28.
State Police say the goal of the enforcement campaign was to keep dangerous drivers off New York roads and prevent crashes, particularly during one of the busiest travel weekends of the summer.
With the Labor Day weekend now behind us, police are reminding drivers that speeding, distracted driving, and getting behind the wheel after drinking can have serious consequences. And as these numbers show, if you’re breaking the law behind the wheel, chances are you’re going to get caught!
