A fatal explosion on a docked barge in Staten Island killed a worker and sent black smoke over Mariners Harbor on Thursday. The blast happened at 3249 Richmond Terrace, where a shipping container fire followed the explosion on the barge Casablanca. FDNY assigned 54 units and about 160 personnel, while Hazmat crews worked to control the fire and secure petroleum. Two firefighters had minor injuries, and residents on Richmond Court said the blast shook apartment buildings and broke windows. Benson Tang, 24, captured video of the smoke, and other footage appeared to record multiple explosions and panic. The incident adds to recent waterfront dangers on Richmond Terrace, including a May explosion and a June 26 shipyard fire.
