MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – A man from Mobile is describing what it was like to be in New York on 9/11.
Jim Wentland traveled to New York for a sales meeting. He then saw smoke coming from the Twin Towers. Wentland described the scene as chaotic. He and his colleagues rented cars to drive back to Mobile.
Since that day 25 years ago, Wentland said he’s had time to reflect.
“You can’t use the word New York without thinking 9/11, ever again, not for me. For everybody that lives in New York at that time, you can understand their stress, their angst about all the surroundings of things that have changed in this country since then, and they want people to not forget the same reasons because they don’t want it to happen again. That’s the main thing is that we don’t forget so this doesn’t happen again, and I hope that’s the big message behind 9/11,” Wentland said.
Wentland was 35 on 9/11. More than a decade later, he went on to teach history at Cottage Hill Christian Academy for four years. He shared his story with students over the years. Wentland said it’s important for the younger generation to know what happened that day.
