GLOVER, Vt. (WCAX) – A steel beam from Ground Zero that has spent more than a decade traveling across Vermont is now on display at Currier’s Market, marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks.
Glover Fire Chief Philip Brooks’ mother received the beam as a gift. She was working as an EMT in Barton during the attacks, and afterward, raised money for a small town near New York City that was hit hard.
That town’s mayor, who was also a New York City fire lieutenant, gave her the beam to say thank you.
Many fire departments across the country received steel from Ground Zero after 9/11, but this beam is different. It was never cleaned, unlike most other pieces.
For the 25th anniversary, Brooks offered to display the beam somewhere central: Currier’s Market.
“(It’s) crazy that its been 25 years. It doesn’t seem like it has been, but yet, it has been. So yeah, it’s just a full circle, I believe, that now we’ve got a piece of it in our store in the little town of Glover,” said Raymond Sweeney, Currier’s Market owner.
The beam has a permanent home at the Glover Fire Station. Brooks still brings it to events so people can see it up close.
