One of the most beautiful places to experience it? Olana State Historic Site, the former home and studio of Hudson River School painter Frederic Edwin Church.
Perched above the Hudson River near Hudson, New York, the 250-acre estate combines an ornate, Persian-inspired mansion with sweeping views of the surrounding valley. But Olana isn’t simply a historic house to tour—it was intentionally designed as a work of art, with winding carriage roads, carefully framed vistas, gardens, and rolling landscapes that take on a particularly stunning look once the fall foliage arrives.

Church, one of the most prominent painters of the Hudson River School, began developing Olana in the 1860s. Rather than treating the property as a traditional country estate, he approached the landscape much like he would a painting, carefully shaping the grounds and views surrounding his home.
The result is an estate where architecture and nature are deeply intertwined. The mansion itself features intricate details and Persian-inspired design, while the surrounding landscape was deliberately arranged to create sweeping compositions of mountains, farmland, and the Hudson River.
That artistic vision is part of what makes Olana so captivating in autumn: the foliage essentially becomes part of the estate’s ever-changing canvas.
What you’ll see in the fall
The Crown Jewel Vista: Standing on the south lawn or porch looking out toward the Catskill Mountains and the Hudson River, where Church intentionally framed the river bend through a brilliant golden canopy.
Carriage Road Loop: Five miles of gently curving historic paths designed to reveal continuous, changing compositions of vibrant orange maples, deep red sumacs, and yellow birch.
Cosy Cottage & Ridge Road Trails: Quiet woodside paths encircling the estate’s 10-acre artificial lake, offering mirror-like fall reflections on clear days.
The Persian-Inspired Main House: Elaborate stenciling, colorful tiles, and arched windows that pop strikingly against the dramatic autumn backdrop.

How to get there from NYC
By Train
Train Line: Amtrak (Empire Service, Ethan Allen Express, or Maple Leaf) from Moynihan Train Hall (Penn Station) to Hudson, NY (HUD).
Duration: ~2 hours on the train.
Last Leg: Take a 10-minute Uber, Lyft, or local taxi from the Hudson train station directly to Olana’s main entrance.
By Car
Taconic Parkway Route: Drive north on the Taconic State Parkway, take the exit for NY-82 West, then merge onto NY-23 West directly toward Olana.
NY Thruway Route: Drive north on I-87 (NY State Thruway) to Exit 21 (Catskill), cross the Rip Van Winkle Bridge (NY-23 East), and the entrance will be on your right.
Duration: ~2 to 2.5 hours depending on Manhattan traffic.
