Man, 67, dies from head injuries weeks after brawl in East Harlem

A 67-year-old man died from his injuries three weeks after battling with a rival in Manhattan’s George Washington Carver Houses, cops said.

Edwin Jimenez got into a fight with Jose Santiago, 52, outside the NYCHA complex on Aug. 24 around 9:45 p.m. at E. 102nd St. and Second Ave. in East Harlem, according to police. Santiago wound up stabbed throughout the body while Jimenez suffered severe head injuries.

EMS transported both men to Mount Sinai Morningside where Santiago was listed in stable condition. Jimenez, who arrived at the hospital in critical condition and never left, died there Friday.

Cops arrested both men after the clash. Jimenez was charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon, while Santiago was charged with assault.

Jimenez lived nearby in East Harlem, about a mile away from the scene of the fatal fight, cops said.

It was unclear what sparked the brawl. The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division is investigating the incident since Jimenez was in police custody when he was brought to the hospital.

The city’s medical examiner was working to determine his cause of death.
