Feminist punks rise up!

Punk royalty queens Gina Birch (The Raincoats), Lora Logic (X-Ray Spex) and Hollie Cook (The Slits) are set to perform as a supergroup at London’s ‘God Save the Queens’ festival.

The event – organised by Up Yours! collective – is a celebration of 50 years of She-Punk, held at Electric Brixton in London.

‘God Save the Queens’ is dedicated to the women who paved the way for the genre and their successors of the future, so it only makes sense for some of the biggest names in UK She-Punk to lead the charge.

There will also be a number of special guests at the event, including Vivien Goldman, author of Revenge of the She-Punks, the 2019 history of what punk has meant to feminine artistic liberation over the past decades.

‘God Save the Queens’ is not just celebrating the music of She-Punk, but the entire cultural legacy. Attendees will get the chance to see never-before-seen archival material, fashion, artwork and photography.

The event precedes a brand-new exhibition at Camden’s Museum of Youth Culture, which opens in late October and also focuses on the female punk movement.

In a statement on the festival, Goldman said, “This festival, and the incredible night we are putting together at Electric Brixton, is that book coming to life on stage. It’s a vital, living continuation of that rebel culture, proving that the female narrative in punk is not an afterthought; it is a driving, evolving force.”

In the wake of Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Daisy Chain Fields’ festival, it is exhilarating to have another massive event celebrating the pioneers of female-fronted music.

Australian girl punks are pleading with our queens (I’m looking at you, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers) to bring this trend further south on the globe.
