Mayor-elect is ruffling Republican feathers, and some of his voters are waiting to see if he can deliver on big promises

I spent the night of Barack ­Obama’s election, in 2008, in Harlem, at a community “watch night” in a place called the House of Justice. They had the election count on a big screen with buffet food and a DJ ­announcing the latest results.

When the election was called for Obama, people ran out on to the street, shouting and crying.
