A loaded gun was recovered at Curtis High School on Monday morning on Staten Island.
Police say an 18-year-old student was fighting with another student.
Witnesses said the students were slamming each other into walls.
School safety agents broke it up and discovered the firearm, with bullets in the cartridge, in the 18-year-old’s backpack.
The student was taken into custody and charges are expected.
“Weapons have no place in our schools or our city. The incident was quickly and safely addressed by our School Safety Agents, and no students or staff were injured,” a spokesperson with the education department said. “The gun was safely recovered, after a search was conducted of the student’s bookbag. NYPD was called immediately upon discovery of the firearm.”
Parents that spoke with Eyewitness News said they were glad that no one was hurt, but alarmed that there was a loaded gun in a backpack.
“I think there are some safety precautions around but I think we can do better… it’s more than the police, parents could play a big role,” said parent Spirit Maroon. “We check our children’s backpacks a lot and see what’s going on with them so you can have as much security as you want, but sometimes you really just need the parental guidance.”
