City Council to weigh limits on screen time in schools

There’s growing scrutiny over the use of screen time and technology in New York City public schools, with some City Council members now calling for a ban on students using YouTube.

The push comes amid concerns about declining test scores and complaints from parents and teachers.

 It also comes less than a week into the new school year, after Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels implemented new restrictions on screen time and a one-year moratorium on student-facing generative AI for students in 2-K through eighth grade.

The City Council is holding a joint oversight hearing on Tuesday on the use of screens and digital devices in public schools.

Council Member Shekar Krishnan, chair of the Committee on Oversight and Investigations, joined “Mornings On 1” to discuss the concerns and what the Council is looking into.
