On September 14, 2026, at approximately 11:14 a.m., New York State Police from SP Brentwood responded to a one-vehicle fatal crash at the northern end of the Sunken Meadow State Parkway in the town of Smithtown, Suffolk County NY.
The preliminary investigation determined that a vehicle crashed into the toll booth area at the entrance to Sunken Meadow State Park and became engulfed in flames.
One deceased occupant was located inside the vehicle. Due to the extensive damage caused by the crash and fire, investigators are working to determine the identity of the deceased occupant and the make and model of the vehicle.
Members of the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the scene. The New York State Park Police, Smithtown Fire Department and Suffolk County Police Department also assisted.
