New York has just been named one of the best states for teachers, but do teachers agree?
I’m pretty sure we all agree that teaching is one of the most rewarding careers out there. Teachers play a huge role in shaping future generations, yet many educators across the country continue to deal with long hours, heavy workloads, and salaries that haven’t kept up with the rising cost of living.
In fact, according to WalletHub, teachers are making an average of 5% less than they did 10 years ago when adjusted for inflation.
But if you’re a teacher in New York, the numbers are looking pretty good because New York has been ranked the #2 best state in the country for teachers in 2026.

The folks at WalletHub have released their yearly breakdown of the best and worst states for teachers, comparing all 50 states and Washington, D.C.
They looked at 24 different factors to determine how teacher-friendly each state is. Those factors included things like teacher salaries, income growth potential, pupil-teacher ratios, public-school spending, school-system quality, and other working conditions.
New York came in second overall, behind Washington.
According to the 2026 rankings, New York received a #1 ranking for average teacher salary when adjusted for cost of living. The state also ranked #1 for public-school spending per student. New York also ranked 4th for teachers’ income growth potential, 6th for pupil-teacher ratio and 8th for the quality of its school system.

There was one area where New York didn’t rank quite as high. The state came in 25th for average starting teacher salary when adjusted for cost of living. New York also ranked #1 for having a digital learning plan.

The five best states for teachers in 2026 are Washington, New York, Virginia, Illinois, and Utah. On the other end of the list, the five lowest-ranked states are New Mexico, Maine, Montana, Hawaii, and New Hampshire.
So while teachers across the country continue to deal with the challenges that come with the job, the 2026 rankings show that New York is one of the states where educators are getting some of the strongest combination of pay, resources and working conditions.
