NYC to host SAFE disposal events to remove harmful household products

NEW YORK (PIX11) — Do you have any potentially harmful items that need to be disposed of safely?

The New York City Department of Sanitation is having a series of SAFE disposal events, with the first one coming soon in Manhattan.

During the free event, New York City residents can dispose of household items that cannot be normally discarded in the trash or recycling bins.

These items include:

Devices that contain mercury

These disposal events allow the Department of Sanitation to remove the items that can be harmful in a safe manner.

The events are:

Sunday, Sept. 20: Manhattan
Union Square Park, North Plaza

Saturday, Sept. 26: Queens
Cunningham Park

Sunday, Oct. 11: Brooklyn
Floyd Bennett Field

Saturday, Oct. 17: Staten Island
Midland Beach Parking Lot 8

Saturday, Oct. 24: The Bronx
Orchard Beach

All events are rain or shine, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

All materials collected will either be recycled, blended for fuel or sent to licensed hazardous waste facilities for safe disposal.
