It’s kind of like speed dating, but between aspiring do-gooders and local nonprofits looking for volunteers.

The Church-in-the-Gardens will host a Volunteer Fair at the CITG Community House in Forest Hills on Sunday, Sept. 27, from 1 pm to 3 pm. Organized by the 112-year-old religious institution’s World Service Committee, this third-ever event will provide a forum for individuals to meet representatives from regional nonprofit organizations via quick interviews in a low-key atmosphere. The two parties will be able to explore common interests and possible partnerships. It’s free, and participating organizations will host display tables in the gymnasium.

So far, 20 entities have confirmed their participation with several more expected to join. The list includes AARP, City Meals on Wheels, CommonPoint, Compost Collective, Forest Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps, iMentor, New York Blood Center, North Shore Animal League America, Northwell Long Island Jewish Forest Hills Hospital, Queens Community House, and Scouting America. They might be looking for assistance in tasks ranging from administration to facility maintenance to translation.

“The last two fairs have been great, and we’re really excited about this one,” stated Rev. Dr. Frederick W. Weidmann, who pastors The Church-in-the-Gardens. “We know so many great people in Queens—retirees, students, families—who would love to donate their time and skills to a great cause. I can’t wait to introduce them to service-minded organizations that would love to have their help. And as always, a special thanks to our World Service Committee, which is involved in so many great projects.”

Located at 15 Borage Place, the CITG Community House is walking distance from the 71st-Continental subway station for the E, F, and R lines and the Long Island Rail Road’s Forest Hills stop. The host will provide temporary permits to motorists for free street parking. (The neighborhood has restrictions, and cars without permits are subject to tickets and boots.)
