Hochul announces first-in-nation flood monitoring network for New York

  • September 17, 2026

ALBANY, N.Y. (WCAX) – New York is renewing efforts for flood resiliency with a new statewide monitoring initiative.

Gov. Kathy Hochul today announced a first-in-the-nation hydrologic monitoring network called FloodSafe NY.

The goal is to give local governments access to water data needed to identify flooding patterns to better prepare communities.

Officials said the improved technology will reduce damage from future flooding events by anticipating flood risks earlier and making smarter infrastructure decisions.

“This nation-leading initiative will provide New Yorkers with enhanced data to identify flood risks, adapt to climate risks, respond and recover from droughts, and ensure adequate clean water supplies, improve water resource policy and drive economic development,” said Amanda Lefton, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation commissioner.

FloodSafe NY is a partnership between the Department of Environmental Conservation and the U.S. Geological Survey.
