The Greek Teachers Association “Prometheus” held its 2026 elections, Sunday afternoon, September 13, in the community center of Sts. Catherine and George Church, at 22-30 33rd St, Astoria. The 2026 officers are the following educators: Eleni Trimmi Galldis, President; Vasiliki Filiotis, Vice-President; Adamantia Mari, 1st Secretary; Christian Kostalou, 2nd Secretary; and Dr. John G. Siolas, Treasurer.

“It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge,” Albert Einstein. That is what “Prometheus” has been doing for 51 years. It is a 501c3 tax-exempt non-profit organization of Greek American educators engaged in promoting Greek language and civilization. “Prometheus” was founded in 1975 by legendary Greek American educator Constantine Parthenis. He was a WWII Greek hero. He served as Principal of the Greek Department of Education of St. Demetrios Greek American Parochial School and the Greek Afternoon School of Astoria.

The Greek American educators of the “Prometheus” society continue the dedicated work of the original founders. They open the doors to learn about the beauty of the Byzantine Empire: Kings, Queens, military figures that spread Greek civilization in three continents. Their lessons on Ancient Greece mesmerize children. They instill the image of Greece as a great civilization that kept learning alive when Western Europe was illiterate. “Prometheus”’ Greek American educators make their students proud of themselves by teaching their unique roots of over three thousand years.

“Prometheus” has hosted academic symposiums dedicated to Greek Letters and historical events such as the 1821 Greek Revolution. There is a collaboration with the Federation of Hellenic-American Educators, The Hellenic Paideia of America, Cultural Associations of America, and local community churches and Hermes International Trade events.

The past presidents of “Prometheus” included: Konstantinos Parthenis, Founder, 1975-1976, 1977-1979, 1992-1994; Elias Diakolios, 1976-1977; John Markopoulos, 1979-1981; Dr. John Siolas, 1981-1983, 1988-1990; Timoleon Kokkinos, 1983-1985; John Takas, 1985-1986; Athena Kromidas, 1986-1988, 1990-1992; George Kanellopoulos, 1994-1996; Dr. Andreas Zachariou, 1996-1998, whose award was accepted by Dr. John Spiridakis, university professor/attorney; Eleni Galidis, 2000-2002; Irene Demas, 2003-2005; Stella Kokolis, 2005-2007; Apostolos Fountas, 2007-2009; Vasiliki Filiotis, 2009-2013,  Demosthenes Triantafillou, 2013-2020, and Meropi Kyriakou 2020-2026.
