NEW YORK (PIX11) – A freeze warning is set to go into effect in New York and New Jersey early on Veterans Day morning, according to the National Weather Service.
The freeze comes after warmer temperatures in the mid-50s and showers on Monday. Here’s everything you should know about the freeze warning:
NYC forecast and PIX11’s Weather Center
Timing
Temperatures will start dropping around 1 a.m. on Tuesday, according to the NWS. The warning lasts through 9 a.m.
Wind chill values will be between 25 and 35 degrees, with gusts as high as 40 mph.
Average temperatures
The temperature could get as low as 30 degrees, according to the NWS. Commuters who are driving to work should take an extra few minutes to warm up their car.
How to protect yourself
The New York City Office of Emergency Management posted on X about how New Yorkers can protect themselves during the freeze:
Keep pets safe. Bring animals indoors overnight. Even brief exposure to freezing temperatures can be dangerous.
Protect outdoor plants. Move potted plants inside. Cover anything left outdoors with cloth or burlap to prevent frost damage.
Protect pipes from freezing. In unheated or drafty areas, let a very small trickle run from the most at-risk faucet. Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate.
Dress warmly. Wind chill may make it feel even colder. Wear layers and cover exposed skin, especially during the early morning hours.
Frost likely on windshields, sidewalks, and other surfaces. Use caution when walking, biking, or driving. Plan extra time Tuesday morning to warm up your car and clear your windows.
Future forecast
Temperatures will warm up to the mid-40s on Tuesday. Highs for the rest of the week will stay between the mid-40s to just over 50 degrees.
