ALBANY, N.Y. (WCAX) – New York is providing free car seat inspections across the state as part of child passenger safety week.
Certified safety technicians will inspect car seats for proper installation, size and expiration dates.
If a technician deems an existing car seat unsafe, a free replacement seat will be provided.
An estimated 80% to 90% of car seats in New York are installed incorrectly, state officials said.
“I highly encourage parents and caregivers to take advantage of these free car seat checks. It’s a quick, easy way to make sure you have the right seat and that it’s installed correctly,” Christian Jackstadt, acting commissioner of the state Department of Motor Vehicles, said.
Last year, technicians replaced more than 300 unsafe seats.
