Three employees of a nursing home in Ilion have been charged in connection to the death of a resident for allegedly letting her choke to death, according to the state Attorney General’s Office.
The 34-year-old resident began her stay at The Grand at Mohawk Valley nursing home three days before her death on Aug. 23.
The AG’s office said she was left alone in the facility’s dining room, swallowed a meatball and began choking. One of the staff members allegedly noticed the resident was choking and did not call for help.
That’s where she remained for an hour and a half before other employees brought her to her room and called 911. She was pronounced dead in her room.
According to investigators, the resident suffered from a rare genetic condition, which made it difficult to swallow solid food, requiring constant supervision. She also had an eating disorder.
The three employees were charged with multiple felonies and one misdemeanor. One was also charged with second-degree manslaughter.
