CARBON COUNTY, Pa. – The coroner has identified a 28-year-old New York man who died in a hit-and-run accident in Penn Forest Township late Thursday night, police say.
Kyle Elardo of Suffolk County, New York, was pronounced dead on Thursday at 12:18 a.m. by Carbon County Chief Deputy Coroner Jason T. Smith.
On Thursday around 11:30 p.m., Pennsylvania State Police responded to State Route 903 and Church Road for reports of a fatal hit-and-run crash.
Through investigation, police determined the victim was operating an ATV and, for unknown reasons, fell off into the roadway.
The victim fell into the Route 903 northbound lane, where they were then struck by a vehicle, authorities say.
After the initial impact, the car failed to stop, fleeing the scene in an unknown direction, officials say.
According to police, the ATV came to a controlled stop off the roadway near a small tree on the right side of the road, displaying no damage.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by the Carbon County Coroner. A next-of-kin notification has been made, and the victim’s identity is not being released at this time.
Police suspect that the second vehicle involved was a white Subaru sedan with driver-side front fender damage.
According to authorities, the ATV was transported back to PSP Fern Ridge and placed into evidence.
This case remains open pending further investigation, police say.
The coroner’s office says an autopsy is scheduled for Monday, September 21, at the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office & Forensics Center.
