Van Buren, N.Y. — A jackknifed tractor-trailer in an active work zone on the New York State Thruway in Onondaga County caused a chain-reaction crash involving three other vehicles on Thursday morning.
According to New York State Police, the incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. on Interstate 90 in the town of Van Buren.
Steven Garpue Nauhn, 38, of Rochester, was driving a 2020 Freightliner westbound in the left lane when he lost control and struck a concrete barrier. The impact pushed the barrier into the eastbound lanes, where three vehicles traveling eastbound were caught in a subsequent crash as they tried to avoid the obstruction.
Nauhn and one other driver were transported to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse with minor injuries.
Police say that peed appeared to be a contributing factor in the crash.
Nauhn was issued traffic tickets and is scheduled to appear in Van Buren Town Court at a later date.
Authorities reminded drivers to slow down, remain alert, and follow New York’s Move Over Law, especially in work zones.
