Transit detectives are looking for the man who stabbed a straphanger in the face in an unprovoked attack inside a Brooklyn subway station on Sunday evening.

According to police sources, the brutal assault unfolded inside the Rockaway Avenue station just before 6 p.m. on Sept. 20.

Law enforcement sources said the victim, a 26-year-old man, was standing on the southbound C train platform when he was stabbed in the face with what was described as a metal object. Police report that the pair did not know one another, and the attacker did not speak to the victim prior to the stabbing.

Officers from Transit District 1 and the 73rd Precinct responded to the incident. EMS rushed the injured commuter to Brookdale University Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

Police are looking to question a heavyset man wearing a dark-colored sweater who fled on a southbound C train.

No arrests have been made and the investigation remains ongoing.
