Irish Famine memorials have been dedicated in St. George on Staten Island as the Global Irish Famine Way reached the United States. The two memorials mark the formal arrival of the route in America, with Staten Island chosen as its first stop. They honor Irish immigrants who died after reaching the former Marine Hospital and Quarantine Station during the Great Famine. In 2014, 83 intact bodies were removed from the mass grave behind the former Quarantine Station and reinterred in a nearby cemetery. The dedication also highlighted the many people who left Ireland during the famine in the 1840s and the suffering tied to that journey. Children placed flowers at the memorials, and some attendees left stones as the monuments were blessed in St. George.
