With the East Coast expected to have a “long, spectacular” fall foliage season in 2026, the annual countdown to peak color is officially on. And we know New York isn’t exactly subtle when it comes to putting on a fiery display.
If you were disappointed by last year’s blink-and-you-missed-it foliage—caused by drought-stressed forests that dropped their leaves almost overnight—you’re in for a treat this year.
And right on cue, the famous I Love NY Fall Foliage Report has just released its first update for the season—and the leaves are already starting to turn.
The First Signs of Changing Colors Are Officially Here
The I Love NY Fall Foliage Report is an annual tradition that relies on more than 100 volunteer field observers to track color progression. Every Wednesday afternoon, they break down the leaf-peeping timeline into six stages: no change, just changing, mid-point, near peak, at peak, and past peak.

According to the very first report of 2026, the earliest signs of autumn are beginning to pop up in Upstate New York. If you’re itching for a pre-fall escape this weekend, head to these locations where the most significant changes are already underway:
Adirondacks: Tupper Lake, Long Lake, Wilmington, Benson, Lake Pleasant, Old Forge (perfect considering the Adirondacks were recently crowned America’s No. 1 fall foliage destination!)
Catskills: Delhi
Central New York: Utica
If you’re heading to the Adirondacks, we suggest taking a drive down this 30-mile stretch of road that winds through stunning mountain passes and river valleys, earning its reputation as one of the country’s top scenic drives for autumn colors!
Your New York Leaf-Peeping Timeline
Because El Niño is pushing the East Coast toward a warmer fall pattern, the cool nights needed to kick-start the color transition are slightly delayed. This slower lead-up means that you won’t have to stress about squeezing your leaf-peeping into one exact weekend.

When Will Fall Foliage Peak in NYC?
If you don’t have the time to venture up the Hudson River, the colors are eventually coming to us. NYC is one of the last places in New York State to hit peak color.
According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac’s 2026 Fall Foliage Forecast, New York City should hit peak fall color right around November 1, 2026.
Currently, the five boroughs are still fairly green, with no significant foliage change as of now. But once November arrives, you won’t need a Metro-North ticket to see the fiery display.
Central Park, Prospect Park, and the rugged, winding trails of Fort Tryon Park will offer massive, colorful canopies right off the subway.
