NYSP Announces Fall Safe Speed Week

If you tend to put a little too much right foot on New York roads, consider this your friendly reminder to ease up. Oh, and don’t just assume the ordinary-looking vehicle next to you isn’t watching.

The New York State Police have announced a six-day “Fall Safe Speed” enforcement campaign, running Tuesday, September 22nd through Sunday, September 27th.

During the crackdown, Troopers will target speeding and aggressive driving, as well as distracted and impaired driving, seat belt violations, and motorists who fail to follow New York’s Move Over Law.

Police say the increased enforcement is for a serious reason.

Speed is listed as a contributing factor in nearly one-third of fatal crashes in New York. According to data cited by State Police, 315 fatal crashes and 12,232 injuries in New York in 2024 were speed-related.

And here’s what drivers should know: not every State Police vehicle involved will look like a traditional marked cruiser.

NYSP May Be Getting Tricky to Catch You

According to NYSP, Troopers will use both marked vehicles and Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement (CITE) vehicles during the campaign.

State Police say CITE vehicles blend into everyday traffic, making it easier for Troopers to spot violations. Once they activate their emergency lights, however, they’re clearly identifiable as emergency vehicles.

Troopers say they’ll actively patrol highways throughout the six-day campaign, in addition to their normal year-round enforcement.

So whether you’re on the Northway, Thruway, or your regular Capital Region commute, take it easy. That innocent-looking vehicle in traffic might have lights hidden in the grille.
