EDGEMERE, Queens (WABC) — Police in Queens are searching for a killer who shot a 14-year-old boy in the back who was on his way to play basketball with a friend.
Detectives think Malakai Adams was shot by someone who was trying to steal his scooter.
The shooting happened at 51-24 Beach Channel Drive at the Ocean Bay Apartments in the Edgemere section just after 3:30 p.m.
When police arrived, they found the 14-year-old victim with a gunshot wound to the back at his apartment complex.
Adams was taken to Cohen Children’s Medical Center in critical condition, and was later pronounced dead.
The suspect, a man wearing a black sweatshirt and white shorts, fled on a scooter east on Beach 51st Street.
The area near Beach Channel Drive is no stranger to violence.
Police say this is at least the sixth murder in the 101st Precinct the year, which is up from three at this point last year.
There are no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing.
