On September 18, 2026, at approximately 4:49 p.m., State Police responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of State Route 3 and County Route 66 in the town of Hounsfield.
A preliminary investigation determined that a 2016 Honda Fit, operated by Mary Lou Alexander, age 83, from New Hartford, was traveling north on County Route 66 and attempting to cross State Route 3 onto State Route 180. The Honda Fit failed to yield at a stop sign and entered the path of a 2024 Honda CR-V, operated by Paula Edwards, age 55, from Sackets Harbor, who was traveling east on State Route 3, resulting in a collision.
Both operators were transported to Samaritan Medical Center.
Mary Lou Alexander was subsequently pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Paula Edwards sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation is ongoing.
