After NYU Langone announced it would suspend gender-affirming care for minors, dozens of people protested outside the hospital.

On Friday, the hospital agreed to stop this care for patients under 19 years old, including puberty blockers and gender-affirming surgeries, along with paying more than $8 million to the Trump administration, in exchange for ending its federal investigation.

“It’s horrible, and it’s a crime that NYU is now denying healthcare to trans kids,” said Christen Clifford, who has two children who are transgender.

Both of her kids received their care at NYU. One, who is still a minor, had been getting treatment there until last week.

“They’re dehumanizing one group, taking away healthcare, and who’s next?” she said.

In a statement to NY1, a spokesperson for NYU Langone said the decision was what was best for its patients.

“DOJ has agreed to resolve its investigations, removing the threat that NYU Langone would have to provide the confidential information previously demanded about patients under 18 who received gender-affirming care at our institution,” said part of the statement. “NYU Langone has not entered into this settlement because of any wrongdoing and has affirmatively denied any wrongdoing or liability in the agreement.”

Elial Cruz said he disagreed and that the hospital had a choice.

“We have protection from the city and state level that are currently not being enforced,” said Cruz, who is the co-founder of the Gender Liberation Movement.

NYU Langone joined Mount Sinai as hospitals in New York City that have agreed to suspend gender-affirming care for minors in exchange for the administration ending its federal probes into the hospitals.

Clifford said her child has already been able to find care at another hospital in the city. Cruz said if more hospitals take the same path as NYU Langone and Mount Sinai, patients who are minors could be forced to seek care outside the city.

Meanwhile, less than a mile north of NYU Langone, President Donald Trump delivered his address at the United Nations. He brought up his administration’s push to end transgender care for minors.

“It is equally unacceptable with all the genuine atrocities in the world, the U.N.’s top human rights officials spend their time criticizing the United States for protecting our children from transgender mutilation and transgender insanity,” he said.
