NYPD Pressed on School Safety After 3 Guns Found in City Schools, Including on Staten Island

NYPD is being pressed on school safety after 3 guns were found in city schools, including one on Staten Island. City Councilmember Kamillah Hanks raised concerns at a Committee on Public Safety meeting on Sept. 16, 2026. She said a loaded gun was recovered from an 18-year-old student’s backpack at Curtis High School after a fight. NYPD Inspector William Haut said the department uses youth violence zones and prevention efforts around schools and routes.
