WASHINGTON (WCAX) – New York Sen. Kristen Gillibrand has offered new legislation to undo tariffs on some Canadian products imposed by the Trump administration.
The Bad Deal Act would end the import ban on Canadian alcohol and dairy products, refunding Americans for any incurred costs. Vermont Sen. Peter Welch is also a bill sponsor.
Sen. Gillibrand is the second New York senator to propose a bill to undo the tariffs. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer proposed one during the summer.
According to Gillibrand, New Yorkers have paid thousands of dollars more due to the tax on goods.
“New York families have spent over $5,500 more for goods and services due to rising costs under President Trump. That’s money that should have been available to help New Yorkers put food on the table, pay their rent and heat their homes,” Gillibrand said.
President Trump says he’s placing the new import ban because Canada has been “discriminating against U.S. industries.” The ban goes into effect on Sept. 29.
