CITYWIDE — “NEVER BEEN to the opera before? Now you can — for free!” Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in a video released Thursday morning announcing a new, long-term partnership with the Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center. Beginning this month, a monthly lottery will release 10,000 free tickets to people who have never attended the Met. This season’s performances include “Macbeth,” “Lincoln in the Bardo” and “La Bohème.” New York City residents only can enter the ticket lottery at on.nyc.gov/opera.
“Art should not be reserved for those who can afford it,” Mamdani said. “Every New Yorker should have the opportunity to sit in these seats, hear these voices and experience this stage, no matter what’s in their bank account.”
Mamdani joined Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su and New York City Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Diya Vij to announce the program, called “Opera for All.”
An hour after the program was announced, 54,000 people had joined a queue on the ticket website.
