Academy Award-winning actor Susan Sarandon and Hacks star Hannah Einbinder were two of more than 100 people arrested by police in New York on Thursday, Sept. 24, during a protest against Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu.
The sit-in protest on First Avenue, just a few blocks from the UN, took place ahead of Netanyahu’s address to the UN General Assembly.
Sarandon and Einbinder were seen being handcuffed with zip ties in videos from the event and taken towards a police bus. The NYPD said 103 people were detained.
Einbinder was spotted holding a banner that read “End the Genocide,” according to The Guardian. Other signs at the protest stated “Fund people not bombs,” and “Stop arming Israel.”

The Guardian also reported that a spokesperson for the NYPD said police were responding to an “unscheduled demonstration.”
“Members of the NYPD Community Affairs Bureau issued … warnings, advising participants that they should leave,” the spokesperson added. “They continued to block the intersection. Multiple individuals who didn’t comply were taken into custody.”
Comedian Caleb Hearon, author Glennon Doyle, New York congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier, and former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning were also arrested at the demonstration, according to Jewish Voice for Peace.
Additionally, actor Cynthia Nixon, playwright Tony Kushner, photographer Nan Goldin, and poet Eileen Myles were all also spotted at the protest.
