Shootings in Staten Island’s 121st Precinct have risen, and City Councilmember Kamillah Hanks is calling for more NYPD officers assigned to the borough. At a City Council Committee on Public Safety meeting on Sept. 16, Hanks asked what has to happen before the NYPD sends more officers. Major crimes in the 121st Precinct were up just 0.4 percent as of Sept. 20, with 681 reported this year versus 678 last year. Traffic fatalities jumped 700 percent, shooting victims rose 400 percent, and felony assaults increased nearly 21 percent, while rape, robbery, burglary, grand larceny, and auto theft declined.
