STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Residents should prepare for a sharp temperature drop overnight as a cold air mass from Canada moves through the region, bringing near-freezing conditions and the possibility of light snow flurries.
Temperatures are expected to plunge from the upper 40s to between 30 and 35 degrees in the Staten Island area, with some locations potentially dipping to the freezing mark of 32 degrees, according to Richard Bann, a National Weather Service meteorologist with the Weather Prediction Center. Manhattan may see slightly warmer conditions, with temperatures in the 33-degree-to-37-degree range.
“It looks like the heart of New York City right now is in the upper 40s,” Bann said. “We’ll probably see that drop in Staten Island. It looks like temperatures will be somewhere in that 30-to-35-degree range — if you don’t freeze, it’ll be close.”
The cold system is expected to bring some very light precipitation, with flurries possible this evening. However, no accumulation is anticipated, and any precipitation should taper off by tomorrow morning.
West to northwest winds will be sustained at 10 to 15 miles per hour, with gusts reaching 25 to 30 miles per hour throughout the night. The wind may help keep temperatures from dropping to freezing by providing enough mixing of the air, Bann noted.
A broad shield of very light snow or flurries extends from the western part of the state eastward to the Massachusetts-New York state line and northward. Some of this precipitation may clip parts of Staten Island, he said.
Tomorrow morning is expected to be more cloudy than sunny and a few lingering snow showers are possible, Bann said. But the system will be pulling away. Afternoon temperatures tomorrow should reach 40 to 43 degrees, he said.
New York City has activated its “Code Blue” protocol in response to the cold conditions, which provides emergency assistance and shelter for homeless individuals during severe weather.
