Christine Heaney, 78
Christine Heaney, 78, passed away on Sept. 21. Born in Manhattan and raised in Inwood, Christine attended Good Shepherd Elementary School and St. Alphonsus Commercial High School. She worked for many years at Western Steel, rising to Assistant to the CEO through her management and organizational skills. Christine later moved to Staten Island, where she met her husband, Michael Heaney. After his passing, she relocated to Jackson, N.J., where she enjoyed card games, arts and crafts, Broadway shows, and trips to Atlantic City. She is survived by her son, Justin Borucki; her stepdaughter, Michele Heaney Coyne; her stepsons, Todd, Danny, and Ryan Heaney; 9 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.

Bridget “Bridie” Gormley, 92
Bridget Gormley passed away at home on Sept. 22. Born Bridget Burke in County Galway, Ireland in 1934, Bridie lived in Grant City for nearly 70 years and walked to work at PS 38 for many years. She was a lifelong member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and took great pride in her Irish heritage, winning many prizes for her Irish soda bread. She enjoyed Irish music, gardening, and family vacations to Ireland, Lourdes and Knock Shrines, the Catskills, and multiple cruises. She is survived by her children Mary T., Fr. Brendan, and Jimmy; 3 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.

Gail Frances Shaw, 75
Gail Frances Shaw, 75, passed away peacefully on Sept. 22, at Carmel Richmond Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born on Aug. 25, 1951, in Tompkinsville, Gail grew up in Stapleton and graduated from Curtis High School. She worked for Chase Manhattan Bank before moving to Mountainside, Calif., in 1980 for a career in the technology industry. There she met her husband, David Shaw, whom she married in 1985. Following David’s death in 2018, Gail returned to Staten Island to be with family. She is survived by her extended family and friends.

John Owen, 99
John Owen, 99, passed away peacefully at his home on Sept. 22. Born on Feb. 17, 1927, in Brooklyn, John graduated from Tottenville High School in 1945 and served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1942 to 1945. He worked as a telephone repairman with Local 1101 and IBEW Local 3, serving for two decades as a district representative and teacher of contract grievance procedures. An accomplished artist and musician, John was known for his vivid paintings of Staten Island’s shores and played drums, guitar, accordion, and piano. He is survived by his wife, Mary Wheeler; his children, Heidi and Stephen Owen; 3 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.
