Two Queens men have been arrested after police said they entered a Manhattan sewer early Wednesday, the NYPD said Friday.
Kevin Rodriguez, 25, and Samuel Reveron, 25, both of Queens, are charged with trespass and conspiracy, police said.
The two were released without bail because the charges were not bail eligible, according to court documents. Reveron was released under supervised release, while Rodriguez was released on his own recognizance, according to the documents.
According to police, officers responded to a 911 call about a possible crime at about 4:35 a.m. Wednesday near Park Avenue and East 61st Street. When officers arrived, they learned three people had exited a sewer and left the area, traveling north on Park Avenue, the NYPD said.
An NYPD surveillance camera captured the incident, authorities said.
Rodriguez and Reveron told detectives they had entered the manhole together to search for valuables that had been washed into storm drains and sewers, according to ABC7.
The manhole is near the hotel where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stayed briefly during the United Nations General Assembly, according to police sources.
The men were seen fleeing in two vehicles, according to police. One was described as a silver sedan. The second was a four-door vehicle driven by a man wearing a black shirt and gray shorts.
The NYPD and federal agents conducted additional sweeps of the area as a precaution because of the United Nations General Assembly and the manhole’s proximity to Netanyahu’s hotel, according to police sources.
Nothing suspicious was found and the investigation remains ongoing.
