BENSONHURST — Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 7201 15th Ave., held its annual NYPD Brooklyn South 9/11 Memorial Mass Sept. 13.
Bishop Robert Brennan was joined by Monsignor Robert Romano and Monsignor David Cassato, both deputy chief chaplains for the NYPD, in celebrating the Mass.

“Bishop Robert Brennan celebrated a Mass in remembrance of the NYPD officers who were killed on Sept. 11, 2001, as well as those who have since died from related illnesses,” said John Quaglione, deputy communications director for the Diocese of Brooklyn.
“The church was filled with active and retired NYPD personnel, parishioners and families. Twenty-five years later, we remember that horrific day and the tremendous loss of life it caused. We will continue to pray for the souls of those we lost and for their families,” Quaglione said.
A memorial display next to the Our Lady of Guadalupe statue featured 23 blue roses for the police officers who died on 9/11. There was also the number 25 in a floral arrangement and 469 white roses to honor the members of the NYPD who have since died from 9/11-related illness.
“Let us also remember the many lives saved by these firefighters on that terrible day. They gave themselves so that others might live,” wrote Brennan.

“The members of the FDNY are guided by their faith and the assurance that God is with them. That strong belief gives them the hope and confidence to face whatever challenges lie ahead. May God bless the members of the FDNY and all those who continue to serve,” Brennan said.
“To the families of the ‘Blue Rose,’ we will never forget,” said the 62nd Precinct on X.
State Sen. Steve Chan honored Cassato and Monsignor Romano in his remarks. He also presented the New York Senate Commendation Award to Romano. Romano began his career in the NYPD in October 1998. Cassato was appointed a New York City Police Chaplain in June 2001.
