MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) – A dog died after it was struck and killed by a car that was trying to park in Manhattan on Monday, sources told PIX11 News.

Police said it happened on Avenue D and East 9th Street around 8 p.m. A driver was reversing their car when it hit the pet, which had walked into the roadway, according to authorities.

The dog was with its owner and not wearing a leash at the time, sources told PIX11 News. No arrests have been made.

Drivers who hit domestic animals in New York City are legally required to stay at the scene, according to 311. They also must call the NYPD immediately to report the incident.
