NEW YORK (PIX11) – Veterans Day is Tuesday, and events are planned throughout New York and New Jersey to celebrate our troops.

The New York City Veterans Day parade is set to kick off on 5th Avenue in Manhattan at 12:30 p.m. More than 20,000 military members are expected to march to commemorate all three branches of service.

Why you won’t have to check your mailbox on Tuesday

This year’s grand marshals are former Medal of Honor recipient Clinton Romesha, Marine veteran and homeless veterans’ advocate Stephen Peck, and NASA astronaut and retired U.S. Navy Captain Sunita “Suni” Williams, who has logged more than 600 days in space and 62 hours of spacewalk time – the most of any female astronaut.

The first parade was held in 1919, after World War I ended with an armistice agreement signed on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month in 1918.

A wreath will also be laid in the Hudson River early Tuesday morning from the U.S.S. Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum on the West Side Highway. There is free admission for all U.S. veterans, whether active or retired.
