New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that his administration had secured $607 million in funding to modernize a public housing complex in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn—only for some reporters to ask about lawsuits, brought by wealthy plaintiffs, against his tax on second homes worth more than $5 million.

In response, Mamdani once again centered the people who voted for him and reminded Americans that the wealthy must pay their share back into the system that has enriched them.

“We’re standing here talking about public housing, a legacy of disinvestment, and I say this to call attention to what those lawsuits are about—they’re about protecting people who own a secondary home in New York City worth more than $5 million,” Mamdani said.

“Yes, I do believe that it is legal and it is right to have a surcharge on the taxation of those homes so we can provide for everyone in the city. Because when I look at the residents of Nostrand Houses, when I look at the residents of NYCHA [New York City Housing Authority] across our city, I see people who have poured themselves into the city, but they often haven’t received that love back,” he continued.

The modernization of the Nostrand Houses is just one part of Mamdani’s “block by block” effort to deliver on the affordable housing promises he made during his 2025 mayoral campaign. Mamdani has excelled at conveying how the government should work for the people while also demanding that those who have benefited the most financially from it pay their fair share toward the collective good.
