The Brooklyn Center Middle and High School gymnasium officially reopened Sept. 26 after undergoing major floor repairs.
The gym was closed during the 2025-26 school year to address damage caused by excessive moisture in the concrete underneath the flooring.
Meanwhile, physical education classes and extracurricular programs had to utilize alternative spaces. This included working with neighboring districts to host winter athletic events in an effort to minimize disruption to student athletes.
The district reopened the gymnasium as part of the 2026 homecoming festivities. The renovated space served as the high school pep fest venue and was also open to the community during the annual Centaur Tailgate Party before the homecoming football game.
“We are super excited to open up this space once again! There has been a lot of history here and we hope to have a brand new era with great things to come,” Brooklyn Center Secondary Principal Arslan Aziz said during a short ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The district worked with engineers and various other parties to restore the gym to working order.
