Police have identified the two suspects who, they say, brutally stabbed an off-duty detective in the Bronx last week.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, during a briefing at One Police Plaza on Oct. 6, said that 25-year-old D’Angelo Caraballo, who has two prior arrests and 24-year-old Sneider Mejia, allegedly attacked Detective Jose Mercedes of the 44th Precinct while robbing him at around 1:45 p.m. on Oct. 2 near 3174 Rochambeau Ave. in Norwood.
Law enforcement sources said the two suspects rode up on a moped to Mercedes as he walked to his parked car. They stabbed him seven times, then ripped the chain off his neck and sped away on the moped.
EMS rushed Mercedes to Jacobi Hospital, where he remained for several days undergoing treatment. He was finally released from the hospital on Monday evening, walking out of the facility to the thunderous applause of fellow officers there to greet him.

“In another incredible feat of strength and determination, Detective Mercedes got up from his wheelchair and walked out of Jacobi Medical Center on his own two feet,” Commissioner Tisch said in a statement. “Hundreds of members of the NYPD were there to cheer their brother on. The entire department stands behind Detective Mercedes as he continues his recovery. And the greatest detectives in the world will relentlessly pursue those responsible for this crime.”
Tisch asked anyone who may know of the suspects’ whereabouts to come forward. They can call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS (for Spanish, dial 888-57-PISTA).
