Police in the Bronx are investigating a horrific death early on Wednesday morning in which a woman plunged to her death from an apartment building while holding a baby in her arms.
Officers from the 49th Precinct rushed to 2550 Olinville Ave. in Allerton at around 3:38 a.m. on Oct. 6 after 911 callers reported that a woman had fallen from a 15th-floor balcony, authorities said.
Arriving officers discovered a 23-year-old woman and a five-month-old baby girl at the scene, both with injuries that authorities said were indicative of a fall.
Police officers rushed the infant, who suffered head trauma, to Jacobi Hospital in their own cruiser while EMS took the 23-year-old to the same hospital. The woman was pronounced dead at the emergency room while the baby remains in critical condition.
Sources say the woman fell with the baby in her arms, partially cushioning the infant’s fall.
According to a report from ABC7, witnesses said the pair were thrown from the building. However, police say they are still investigating and will determine if she fell, jumped, or was pushed.
Police sources did confirm that they are looking to speak with a man, but his exact connection to the case is not yet clear. The man is believed to be in his 30s with a light complexion and a ponytail; he was last seen wearing a gray sweater.
No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
